• Attractive rural practice, close to Bath Cottage hospital.
• Opportunity to train in out of hours care in well organised PCT rota covering Somerset.
• 3 trainers (Piers, Helen and Rebecca), F2’s and medical students.
• First practice in Wessex/Southwest to be awarded the RCGP quality practice award.

The Practice
We cover over 5200 patients who live in the rural triangle between Radstock, Frome and Shepton Mallet. The patients are a mixture of local (mainly agricultural) workers and commuters to Bath and Bristol. We are a dispensing practice and cover our own inpatient beds in Frome Victoria Hospital. This small unit also has diagnostic facilities, outpatient clinics, a minor injury unit and therapy services.

The practice is based in a new purpose built surgery, with a generous suite of consulting rooms, treatment rooms, library, common rooms and dispensary. Our registrars have their own well equipped consulting room, with video facilities, and an up to date flat screened networked PC. There is fast Broadband access to the internet from all the workstations.

All our records are held on computer, with path results being sent electronically and clinical letters are scanned on to the system.

We are fortunate to work with an enthusiastic team of clinicians including nurses (district and practice), physios, midwives and counsellors. We have an impressive range of up to date medical equipment such as defibrillators, pulse oximeter, ambulatory sphygs, extensive minor surgery equipment etc.

All requests for emergency appointments are triaged by the duty doctor for the day, this keeps our workload relatively manageable (and the doctors relatively sane!). Sister Evans is a Nurse Practitioner and Prescriber.

We are very keen to manage our patients within the practice as much as possible, and offer a variety of medical clinics, extensive minor surgery, child health surveillance, family planning etc etc. Referral rates are consequently low. Clinical standards are very high, and we have a regular programme of clinical, audit and significant event audit meetings.

The practice was (and remains) one of the very first to be awarded the RCGP’s Quality Practice Award. This is the highest measurable standard to which a practice can currently aspire in the UK. We are the fourth practice in the UK to be awarded a second time.

On Call
On call cover for the practice is arranged by our local PCT, and we offer supervised training in out of hours.

The Training
We always design an individual training programme for each registrar. This depends for example on their previous experience, skills and clinical interests. From this an educational plan develops, against which progress is regularly reviewed.

A typical programme will include an introductory 3 week block, where we cover the organisation of the practice, how to use the practice computer(!) and GP basics. After this the normal week’s programme will usually look something like this:

 MondayTuesdayWednesdayThursdayFriday
AMSurgery

District nurse & Macmillan Nurse meeting
Surgery
Visits
Educational day including half day with other ST3's in Bath area. Tutorial/Joint surgery/videos Surgery

PMEmergency SurgerySurgerySurgerySurgery
One session a week is permitted for private study

All registrars attend the excellent half day release programme based in Bath. This aims to help you develop as a GP, and to pass the MRGCP exam. Previous pass rates are amongst the highest in the UK.

The practice also teaches medical students, F2’s and Returner Registrars. We very much value input from our registrars into the teaching of junior colleagues.
