Practice Profile

We are a 5 doctor rural dispensing practice situated in the village of Timsbury, which is about 6 miles south of Bath. Our practice area extends to the edge of the city, with a population of some 5000, patients. We dispense to about half of these. We also cover 3 nursing homes and the Avon Cheshire home.

The practice is virtually paperless using EMIS software. The system is fully networked with PCs in all consulting rooms with access to the NHSnet. We have a wide range of equipment including an ECG machine, defibrillator, ambulatory sphygmomanometer, pulse oximeters, spirometer, syringe drivers etc.

We work from a modern single storey building, with numerous consulting rooms (including two for our registrars!), treatment room, meeting room, common room and various offices.

We are fortunate to have access to the minor injuries unit and cottage hospital at Paulton a neighbouring village. This up to date unit also has Xray facilities, physiotherapy and various consultant outpatient clinics. Out of hours our patients are covered by BEMS the emergency service which covers the whole of BANES. Our GP registrars have previously obtained all their OOH experience with BEMS.

Training

Registrars at our practice will have a 2 or 3 week introductory block at the beginning of their post. This will cover the basics of general practice, using the computer etc. In common with all Bath training practices, an individual training plan will be devised for each registrar, depending on their knowledge, previous experience etc. Each week, you can expect 2 formal tutorials. All registrars attend the excellent Wednesday day release course in Bath, which aims to prepare you for the nMRCGP examination, and to help you develop as a general practitioner. All members of the practice team, including the practice manager, practice nurses and attached staff are enthusiastic about supporting the learning of our registrars.

The Doctors

Barbara Barton and Chris Lewis are the trainers. They were both originally trainees on the Bath scheme.

Dr Mark Howell, Dr Brenda Michael and Dr Samantha Mitchell complete the medical team at the practice and are all involved in helping to teach our registrars and to share their expertise in their special areas of knowledge.
